What is the EQAO test?
The EQAO test measures student achievement in reading, writing and mathematics in relation to Ontario Curriculum expectations. The resulting data provide accountability and a gauge of quality in Ontario's publicly funded education system. By providing this important evidence about learning, EQAO acts as a catalyst for increasing the success of Ontario students. EQAO tests are intended to measure the students' ability to:
- Make sense of what they read in different kinds of texts;
- Express their thoughts in writing using appropriate grammar, spelling and punctuation and
- Use appropriate math skills to solve problems
Grades 3 and 6, EQAO tests skills in mathematics, writing, and reading. Grade 9 EQAO tests math only. Grade 10, EQAO tests literacy (ability to read, write and understand English). This is the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) and is a very important test. Students who fail their literacy test will not be allowed to graduate. Students will be allowed to take it again in Grade 11. The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC) is a Grade 12 course that can be taken by those who have written the OSSLT more than once. It is designed to assist students in acquiring basic literacy skills required for getting an Ontario high school diploma.
