USA Sees Largest Score Declines Mathematics Since 1990

Between January and March 2022, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) mathematics assessment was administered to representative samples of fourth- and eighth-grade students in the nation. Results for the nation reflect the performance of students attending public schools, private schools, Bureau of Indian Education schools, and Department of Defense schools. The results are depressing. The US saw the largest score decline in NAEP mathematics at grades 4 and 8 since initial assessments in 1990.

In 2022, average mathematics scores at fourth grade declined in all four census-defined regions of the country—Northeast, Midwest, South, and West. Scores were lower by 7, 3, 5, and 4 points, respectively, compared to 2019. Breaking this down, the average mathematics scores at fourth grade declined in all four census-defined regions of the country—Northeast, Midwest, South, and West. Scores were lower by 7, 3, 5, and 4 points, respectively, compared to 2019.

But maybe things were better for the eight graders, right? Nope, eighth-grade mathematics scores declined across all regions of the country and in 51 states/jurisdictions. The average eighth-grade mathematics score decreased by 8 points compared to 2019 and was lower than all previous assessment years going back to 2003. Again, breaking this down, the average mathematics scores at eighth grade declined in all four census-defined regions of the country—Northeast, Midwest, South, and West. Scores were lower by 9, 8, 8, and 6 points, respectively, compared to 2019.
